WHO WE ARE:

Washington Square Academy has its origins as a small after school program. From a living room table, we began teaching a handful of students. Throughout the 6 years of running a small after school program, we saw immense growth in all of our students. We saw a need for children to get academic support in small groups; and wanting to rise to that challenge, WSA was born! Since we were established over a year ago, Washington Square Academy has become known for its rigorous honors curriculum; our standards of excellence have paved t he way for us to grow into the school we are today. As educators we believe that a student's needs always come first - and that means exceptional education, exceptional support, and exceptional classroom engagement.

Dynamic educator with a n innovative approach to designing and implementing educational programs and curricula. Approach to disseminating curriculum through a lens which develops a students critical & creative thinking skills, and helps students create and meet goals around their high school and post-secondary aspirations. An educator who embraces project-based l earning, and i s eager t o learn m ore about and/or build upon implementing current educational technologies into their classroom. Educational philosophy rooted i n equity, using multicultural/ inclusive resources, and challenging traditional educational paradigms which potentially hinder students developing a lifelong love o f learning. Current ELA Curriculum:

In addition to English Language Arts class, students have Latin & Greek Roots once per week. LAGR is a primarily prescribed curriculum, however the ELA teacher will develop supplemental lesson plans and projects to complement the curriculum. Students’ also have 3 Writer’s Workshop blocks over the course of the ‘A Week/ B Week’ Schedule. ELA teacher is responsible for developing Writer’s Workshop lesson plans.

Throughout the academic year WSA students work on active reading, textual analysis and literary criticism, tone and theme identification, as well as their academic discussion skills through socratic seminars and Harkness Discussions. Writing assignments were centered around higher order thinking and text-based literary analysis, academic research and MLA guidelines, and expository writing. Each novel unit includes author biography, thematically related short stories and poetry, and non-fiction historical resources to better understand context related to date of publication.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract

Pay: From $25.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 4 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

COVID-19 considerations:
We are closely monitoring Covid-19 updates and current data. At present, students and staff are masking aside from lunch and outdoor recess. Additionally WSA students and staff test weekly for Covid-19.
We frequently sanitize high touch surfaces.
