Durham Charter is seeking an outstanding individual to be part of an exciting turnaround of the State of North Carolina’s first charter school. Located in a historic building in the West End neighborhood of downtown Durham, Durham Charter is an independent charter school, founded 26 years ago by members of the Durham community. Durham Charter was the first charter school to open its doors in 1997, leading the movement for school choice in North Carolina. Durham Charter serves just over 600 students from across the county in grades K-9, the vast majority of who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Under general supervision, the EC teacher provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations.
This position involves direct special education instruction to identified students.
Tasks include:
- Developing, writing, and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s grade and development.
- Developing lesson plans, materials and activities that assist EC students in learning appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills to meet appropriate educational goals.
- Monitoring student’s progress and maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Using diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed.
- Employing teaching and motivational methods that meet individual student needs, including adapting or developing materials and presentations to assist in this effort.
- Monitoring and leading productive student behavior, teaching behavioral strategies, and maintaining discipline in the classroom;
- Assisting disabled students with personal and self-help needs, including eating, visiting the restroom, and other essential tasks that the students are unable to perform by themselves.
- Communicating with parents, including providing ongoing written reports regarding students’ educational progress.
- Serving as a case coordinator for assigned students, including holding consultations with caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to understand and meet student needs.
- Maintaining student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities. The EC teacher must comply with state and federal education statutes.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
The EC teacher at Durham Charter must have a degree in special education and North Carolina teaching certification in at least one area of disability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Physical Requirements: The successful candidate must be able to use classroom tools and equipment such as computers, photocopiers, and classroom display screens.
- Teachers must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, as well as move classroom objects.
- Teachers must be able to stand for much of the day.
- Teachers must be able to be both prompt and present, eager to support and motivate Durham Charter scholars and other educators every day.
- Computer and Data Skills: This position requires the ability to compare readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data. The position also requires moderate knowledge of computers and visual classroom tools.
- Interpersonal Communication Skills: This position requires the EC teacher to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving and receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors. The teacher must have the ability to read and interpret correspondence, reports, handbooks, as well as fill in required forms, prepare correspondence, reports, and instructional materials. The position requires the ability to apply logical thinking to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The position also requires the ability to monitor the safety of students, particularly when student is participating in an inclusive activity.
- Privacy Protection: The EC teacher must have the ability to maintain the dignity and protect the privacy of students and their families.
