The Director of Inpatient Acute Care is responsible for the Medical-Surgical, Obstetrics (Women’s Services) and the Intensive Care/Intermediate Care Nursing Units. This position reports directly to of the Chief Nursing/Operations Officer. The Inpatient Acute Care Director is responsible for the overall strategy, planning, organizing, implementing and controlling functions of these departments. The Director is accountable for the patient safety and quality of the services provided and maintains certification and accreditation with the appropriate governing agencies.

Responsible for performance and overall functions of the Medical-Surgical, Obstetrics (Women’s Services) and the Intensive Care and Intermediate Care Nursing Units.Provides overall direction necessary to insure that department services and programs are provided in accordance with standards established by Valley View Medical Center and outside regulatory & licensing agencies such as TJC, Arizona Department of Health Services and the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services.Interviews, selects, ensures proper training of, and when necessary disciplines and/or discharges department personnel.Develops secures approval of, and implements the short term and long term departmental goals and objectives that assist Valley View Medical Center in achieving the objectives outlined in the strategic plan.Develops and implements the approved annual department (s) budget (s).Promotes an environment that encourages team building by courteously, cooperatively, and effectively working with physicians, ancillary, nursing and other support personnel in maintaining the standards of professional nursing practice in the multidisciplinary setting.Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring and firing. Collaborates with Human Resources in the activities surrounding interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating and assessing competency of staff.Maintains a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.Attends committee and management meetings, as appropriate.Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, partnering others as needed.Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.Assists with onboarding and mentoring of new Directors, Managers and Clinical Coordinators.Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and inservice training for unit staff members, participates in guidance and educational programs.,Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the department.Consults with staff, physicians, and the Chief Nursing and Operating Officer and to ensure patient needs are met by ensuring high quality care delivery.

Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.

Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.

Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.
