The Director, H&W Benefits is responsible for the development and administration of employee benefit programs, medical and life insurance plans impacting the lives of over 90,000 employees and dependents. This position will work with key stakeholders on benefits strategies and program design to ensure plans are competitive, yet cost-effective. The position accomplishes this goal with the support of an internal benefits team, supported by multiple third party administrators, service and system partners.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Design benefits strategy and programs. Effectively influence the adoption of the strategy and implement, monitor, and continuously improve the organization, processes and systems required to deliver benefits in line with agreed strategy.
  • Reviews company programs and evaluates current trends, practices, and costs.
  • Ensures benefits programs comply with legal and reporting requirements.
  • Oversees the annual employee enrollment process. Drive the employee benefits communication / training strategy including key messages, methodology, collateral materials, briefing sessions, timeline, resources, and budget. Implement annual enrollment.
  • Manage identification, selection and partnership with administrative and service vendors including governance, contract compliance, issues management, communications frequency, schedule, and approach.
  • Prepares recommendations to senior leadership regarding rates, services, administration, and coverage.
  • Prepares recommendations to senior leadership regarding plan changes and modifications.
  • Oversees a team of benefit professionals and demonstrates an ability to motivate and inspire the team.
  • Maintain a service-based culture. Ensure that all department employees understand who their key customers are and are providing service in line with expectations and commitments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in health science administration, accounting, business, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience in large company ($1B or greater in annual revenue), responsible for development, implementation and maintenance of health and welfare benefits strategies utilizing both internal staff and external administrators/service partners.
  • Strong analytical skills required.
  • Knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements both adopted and pending affecting compensation and employee benefit programs, including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, SECTION 125, Workers’ Compensation, Medicare, and Social Security and DOL requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of HMO, PPO and High Deductible plan design and administration.
  • Excellent ability to lead and motivate direct and indirect teams effectively. Must be able to influence.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office suite of applications required with particular strength in advanced Excel functionality.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational communications skills required.
  • Excellent ability to build consensus across a wide range of constituents.
  • Excellent contract development, negotiation, and administration capabilities.
  • Strong ability to manage complex projects utilizing standard project management tools and techniques.

Preferences:

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a health and welfare benefits role.
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) designation.
