Deputy Director of Veterans Service Agency

Delaware County is accepting applications for a full-time Deputy Director of Veterans Service Agency to help oversee all operations of the department. The successful candidate will be training with the Director in anticipation of taking over the Director's role upon completion of a successful training period. This training period will commence upon hire and progress as necessary, leading up to the current Director's retirement later this year. Duties include assisting veterans and their dependents in all phases of veterans' issues and informing them of various benefit programs. Typical work activities include interviewing veterans and assisting them in filing applications for disability benefits, out-patient medical treatment, insurance, death and burial benefits, education, job assistance, housing, tax exemptions, and addressing other problems unique to veterans. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to secure and maintain documentary evidence necessary for the proper presentation of claims and to represent veterans and claimants before various boards of officials. The position may also involve making house calls to the incapacitated, arranging transportation, and consulting with doctors, veterans' organizations, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and other agencies on behalf of veterans. In this position, you will learn to prepare the department's annual budget and familiarize yourself with the management of the department. This position is accountable to the Director of Veterans Service Agency and includes full benefit package, including NYS Retirement and eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Requirements:

• Must be a veteran as defined in section 350 of Executive Law
• Two years of business, personnel, or administrative experience, preferably with veterans or members of the armed forces, in giving counsel and assistance to individuals regarding personal, legal, financial, or placement problems, OR
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered 2-year college with a degree in business administration, personnel management, behavioral sciences, or related field, OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above
• Valid NYS driver's license at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
