As a Modulate labeler, you will be able to engage with a small community of individuals helping to make gaming spaces less toxic and more accepting, by helping to improve the world’s first voice chat moderation system. In this remote opportunity, you will listen to small audio clips of Portuguese speech, transcribe them, and provide some assumptions about each clip based on your past experience and on training provided by us. In joining this community, you will be compensated based on minutes labeled, as an independent contractor, to mark toxicity in audio clips from gaming spaces we have been provided for data. This is an opportunity where you can make your own hours, go at your own pace and get experience with transcription and chat moderation.
This position has variable work availability but flexible hours. Our current availability contains an estimated 4 weeks of work available. Upon completion there will be a waiting period of at least a week before the next project is available. Pools will become available as initial pools are finished. Compensation will be at a rate of $50 per twelve minutes of labeled audio. This position is a great fit for anyone who needs extra money aside from their normal job, anyone looking to get started into dictation or transcription work, or if you are looking for a flexible opportunity while you pursue other interests.

We are looking for individuals who have the following skills:
- Self directed organization skills: We are looking for individuals who can organize their own time efficiently and effectively to maximize label output. You must have strong self discipline and be able to self direct your work with the resources we provide.
- Experience in the gaming community: Since our data is related to gaming communities, we are looking for people who are already familiar with this community to help us understand it. It is important to be familiar with terms and jargon specific to different games so that we can label the audio effectively.
- A strong understanding of social issues, ethics, and open mindedness: As a labeler, you will encounter clips that touch on social issues, ethical disputes, and several other topics that may challenge one’s perception and ideas. We are looking for someone who understands these issues enough to feel comfortable engaging them head on and making judgment calls about them in real time, but also those who are open to discussing them in collaboration with other team members.
- A high tolerance for hearing toxic or concerning audio clips: We believe it is our responsibility to provide resources for our contractors to handle these issues and do, but we also acknowledge that there are limits to what we can facilitate for our contractors. For this reason, we are looking for those who have the proper support systems and resources needed to handle hearing concerning audio on a regular basis.
- Strong listening skills and comprehension: Transcribing speakers is a large part of what we do, and we are looking for the skills to match. Having a fast typing speed and good comprehension here means you will be able to make the most out of your experience, though it is not required to apply.
