Overview:
The Copywriter, a writer and editor, is a part of BPL’s Marketing & Communications (MAC) team. The Copywriter should be a gifted storyteller able to write across multiple platforms for a variety of audiences and reading levels. The ideal candidate will believe deeply in the Library’s mission and can express, in original and inspiring language, its importance to Brooklyn’s 2.7 million residents.
The Copywriter will work closely with the MAC team to develop engaging materials that convey the extraordinary breadth of the Library’s collections, programs and services.
Marketing & Communications is the creative powerhouse behind the BPL brand, responsible for showing Brooklynites what the Library can do for them—from books to multi-lingual storytimes, technology and art workshops, one-on-one career help and so much more! The 15-person department serves as an in-house marketing, PR and design shop for the departments and branches that make up the organization. Responsibilities:

- Manage multiple projects, start-to-finish, for various internal clients and work with project teams to meet all deadlines, across print, web and email as required, providing excellent customer service
- Collaborate with other staff writers and designers
- Work independently and as part of the creative team to deliver engaging copy for print, web and email
- Develop and build the Library’s brand voice across all materials
- Proofread and edit materials created by MAC
- Remain technologically proficient at existing and emerging platforms for email marketing and website content, with the ability to handle production workflow independently
E
ducation and/or
Certification
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 2-3 years of professional experience with increasing levels of responsibility

Required:
The ability to provide excellent service and leadership- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
- Stellar proofing and copyediting skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Prior experience working with and in email marketing platforms
- Ability to write effectively in a variety of styles for diverse audiences
- Comprehensive understanding of the copy/design collaborative process
- Proven ability to proactively manage editorial projects from start to finish
Preferred:
Previous experience writing for a communications or development department of a non-profit organization- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Familiarity with Drupal and/or HTML/CSS
