Vice President – Accounting & Finance
General Summary:
The Controller is responsible for all Accounting activities of the company, including general ledger accounting and revenue recognition and job costing. The Controller prepares the monthly financial statements and related schedules for review by the VP A&F. The Controller supervises and trains (directly or indirectly) all accounting department staff and works closely with the VP A&F to ensure accuracy and efficiency in all areas of accounting.
Essential Functions:
- Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate accounting direct report staff.
- Supervise general accounting staff and maintain a positive environment resulting in motivated personnel, efficient procedures and an adequate internal control system.
- Oversee daily activities of general accounting department that includes the payroll, human resources, accounts payable, accounts receivable and inventory functions
- Establish and implement short and long range goals and objectives with direct reports and maintain efficient and effective operating procedures in support of the internal customer base.
- Coordinate monthly financial close including preparation of journal entries, job cost system close, analyzing budget variances, preparation of supporting schedules and distribution of financial statements.
- Ensure compliance regarding payroll tax, sales/use tax, property taxes, franchise tax, union reporting, etc., and coordinate the satisfactory completion of any audits performed in these areas.
- Coordinate the annual fiscal audit and prepare data as required to satisfy those requirements and any internal requirements to maintain accurate financial statements.
- Maintain reconciliation of job cost system to general ledger reporting and other balance sheet account reconciliations on a timely and complete basis.
- Perform financial analysis and budget cycle assistance as directed by the VP Acct & Finance.
Secondary Functions:
- Understanding of all department functions and ability to perform those functions in a back-up capacity.
- Ensures all accounting systems are maintained and upgraded as needed by partnering with outside consultants as needed.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor s degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting required
- Minimum 7 years general accounting experience required, preferably in a construction environment with mix of union and non-union employees.
- Accounting experience should be in all facets including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job costing, general ledger, inventory and tax/license.
- Minimum 5 years construction accounting experience at a supervisory level, Sage 300 CRE/Timberline construction software experience preferred
- Intermediate to advanced skill level with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word
Skill Requirements:
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and all accounting process necessary to perform the routine requirements of a construction business.
- Knowledge of automated financial and accounting systems
- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations
- Knowledge of local union regulations as part of the collective bargaining agreement
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare meaningful financial reporting
- Extreme attention to detail, accuracy, and efficiency
- Strong communication skills with all levels of employees
- Sensitivity to confidential information and ability to maintain and manage secrecy in a controlled environment
- Ability to multi-task and coordinate the completion of various time-sensitive tasks
- Problem-solving and process improvement skills
- Supervisory skills necessary to maintain a highly motivated team
- Advanced level of professionalism and maturity displayed in a fast paced environment
- Strong dedication & commitment to timely task completion & flexibility with work hours to ensure the task is completed
