Community Youth Council Organizer
Job description
Flatbush Development Corporation is seeking a Community Youth Council Organizer to work with young community members and empower them to self-advocate and strengthen their communities. They will identify teen & young adult leaders to form a youth advisory board and support the cornerstone parent and tenant advisory board leaders in reaching neighbors in order to create and sustain positive change in their communities. The ideal candidate will be a team player who can interact well with wide-range of individuals from a variety of social, ethnic, age and organizational backgrounds and is very organized and detail oriented. The Community Youth Council Organizer will report directly to the Director of youth services and work collaboratively with the cornerstone program directors
Specific Responsibilities:
- Create and build a network of youth community leaders to encourage and support resident participation in activities and events via the youth advisory board
- Collaborate with FDC leadership, youth, parent and tenant advisory board to build and develop strategies to advocate for Glenwood & Kingsborough community residents
- Bridge and foster partnerships with the community, relevant organizations and elected officials that support community goals
- Develop and maintain effective communication between Flatbush Development Corporation and the community
- Assist in development of strategic and tactical advocacy plans in answer to current events or matters that impact the community
- Develop and manage sub-committees with community members to ensure that individuals interested in a greater quality of life get the necessary assistance
- Performs other duties as assigned by agency leadership
Qualifications:
- A commitment to the mission and programs of FDC
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of experience in community organizing and/or advocacy; event planning and coordination
- Extensive experience performing community outreach and mobilization
- Experience advising and training community leaders
- Passionate about improving the lives of Brooklyn residents and their families
- Must be a team player and have the ability to take the initiative
- Great organization skills and have a keen sense of detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Must have a flexible schedule, including working evenings and occasional weekends
- Bilingual a plus (English/French, or English/Spanish)
