Communications Specialist
Location: Houston, TX
Type: Full-time/Exempt

ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Communications Specialists handle public relations, information output, and media requests. They can also plan social media campaigns or advertising efforts for a business. Overall, they ensure that HLB has an excellent and effective marketing and outreach strategy. The communications specialist will lead and support the communication of HLB operations, events, accomplishments, and opportunities.
DAILY DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop effective corporate communication strategies
- Manage internal and external communications (memos, newsletters etc.)
- Draft content (e.g. press releases) for mass media or company website
- Help to organize initiatives, events or press conferences
- Liaise with media and handle requests for interviews, statements etc.
- Create social media posts, ads and summaries of events
- Help to perform “damage control” in cases of bad publicity
- Facilitate the resolution of disputes with the public or external vendors
- Assist in the communication of strategies, events or messages from senior leadership
- Promote the mission of HLB in communities and stimulate new opportunities for collaboration
- Communicate progress of HLB programs to community stakeholders
- Supports leadership team with insight and concepts in public and community relations strategies and implementation.
- Supports the planning and execution of forums, walking tours, conferences and other community events and meetings with staff.
- Manage, create, and maintain an administrative process for tracking data, such as HLB attendees, into CRM such as Asana
- Promotes transparency and authenticity in all organizational practices and efforts.
- Supports programs related to empowering neighbors and their respective communities, specifically but not limited to the Complete Community neighborhoods.
SKILLS:
- Skill in oral and written communication, especially communicating in and between various audiences, communities, and stakeholders
- Must have a passion for helping others and the mission of the civil rights organization
- Ability to be available, accessible, and demonstrate follow through to build trust, with an understanding that work assignments associated with this position may require work hours during weeknights and weekends.
- Knowledge of techniques for ensuring diversity, inclusion and racial equity in all work.
- Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
- Skill in listening, hearing, and sensing from communities, translating that information into action.
- Skill in grant sourcing and writing
- Strong leadership and project management skills and experience
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include some evenings and weekends as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Public Relations, Public Administration, Communications, Marketing or a closely related field plus at least one year of experience involving the development and coordination of public information or community outreach or involvement programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university plus three (3) years of experience involving the development and coordination of public information or community outreach or involvement programs.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
