Title: Children’s Program Coordinator Department: Program
Type: Full -Time/ hourly Supervisor: Program Director
Job Summary: The Children’s Program Coordinator works directly with the Children’s Program Assistant in providing age appropriate developmental activities as well as conducting various children’s assessments, activities, and childcare.
Responsibilities:
1. Works with Executive Director and Program Director to set goals, objectives and annual work plan for Children’s Program.
2. Plans and carries out a comprehensive program for the children offering creative and educational opportunities for all ages.
3. Conducts weekly children’s support groups.
4. Works closely with other supportive staff to maintain collaborative approach to client services.
5. Provides individual sessions with children and/or parents as needed.
6. Trains and supervises student interns/volunteers working in the Children’s Program
7. Coordinates and provides transportation when needed.
8. Facilitates workshops in the community as requested.
9. Maintains an understanding of domestic violence, mental health issues and child abuse/ neglect.
10. Conducts child and family assessments screenings based on ACE Study. Utilizes outcomes to screen individual child development.
11. Conducts Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) with all age appropriate children. Utilizes outcomes to screen individual child development.
12. Establish and maintain positive relationships with program constituents including but not limited to school principals, social workers, families, volunteers, teachers, and donors.
13. Makes referrals concerning children to appropriate agencies as needed.
14. Provides childcare for supportive services to support facilitation of adult activities such as support groups.
15. Assists with child related needs
16. Provides each child with an intake assessment and evaluation upon entrance to shelter.
17. Documents all services, activities, and incidents using appropriate forms and reports.
18. Works collaboratively with other children’s resources and outside agencies (e.g. Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services, and other human services programs).
19. Conducts menu planning, meal counts and financial reconciliation for all USDA related items.
20. Responsible for ensuring health and fire inspections are conducted yearly.
21. Assists in identifying and implementing interventions to reduce the frequency of children’s behavioral violations at school, and any health needs.
22. Facilitates monthly parenting education groups.
23. Facilitating monthly male mentoring activities to include coordinating the volunteers and making arrangements for activities.
24. Performs all other duties as needed and/or assigned.
25. Maintains a professional demeanor with supervisor, co-workers, clients, and other organizations. Communicates effectively and courteously. Brings appropriate issues to the supervisor’s attention. Adheres to H.E.R. Shelter policies and procedures, including Standard of Conduct.
Requirements:
Undergraduate degree in child development, human services, education, sociology, or related area preferred. Experience with children of all ages is helpful.
Personal Qualifications:
- Organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Professional and sensitive attitude, which reflects the philosophy of the H.E.R. Shelter.
- Excellent driving record, valid driver’s license, reliable transportation
- Ability to pass a background check

- Portsmouth, VA: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
Experience:
- ACEs/Trauma informed care: 1 year (Preferred)
License/Certification:
- Driver's License (Required)
