SUMMARY
Conduct bioinformatics activities in support of several norovirus projects being undertaken in the Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB). The Bioinformatician will provide support to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB) , Norovirus Team within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following:
- Perform evolutionary, phylogenetic, and phylodynamic studies of viral sequence data
- Process raw sequence data produced by Sanger and next-generation sequencing Identify, characterize, and annotate genes found in sequence data
- Write scientific manuscripts and publish them in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Collaborate on genetic analysis projects and studies with various internal and external partners
- Assist laboratory scientists (with varying levels of computational expertise) in the design and implementation of bioinformatics tools that support automation of data analysis, especially for next generation sequencing data and large data sets
- Identify unique regions of pathogen genomes for use as targets in molecular diagnostic assays
SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY
No supervisory or management authority.
EDUCATON AND EXPERIENCE
Master of Science degree in bioinformatics or related field and 3-5 years experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The candidate must have at a minimum:
- High familiarity with scientific databases
- Experience with command line and R package
- Experience with high computing cluster
- Ability to process raw sequence data produced by Sanger and next generation sequencing
- Ability to identify, characterize, and annotate genes found in sequence data
- Ability to perform evolutionary, phylogenetic, and phylodynamic studies of sequence data
- Ability to identify unique regions of pathogen genomes for use as targets in molecular diagnostic assays
- Ability to successfully pass a federal background check and a drug screen
- Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently blocked from enforcement pending court proceedings. Therefore, Cherokee Federal is halting the application of the mandate; however, if the injunction is lifted, Cherokee Federal will restore administration of the vaccine requirement.

Work will be performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
