Southwest Youth and Family Services is a proud partner of Youth Guidance and is bringing BAM to four Highline district schools. Youth Guidance is a Chicago based organization that develops and implements the Becoming a Man (BAM) program, which is a school-based program that guides young men to learn, internalize and practice social cognitive skills, make responsible decisions for their future and become positive members of their school and community.
BAM Counselors are responsible for delivering trauma-informed school-based counseling, mentoring, and character development for vulnerable young men in grades 7-12.
This position is full time, 36 hours per week, flexible schedule required with compensation range between $ 52,000.00 to 55,000.00 annually, nonexempt. For nearly 40 years Southwest Youth and Family Services (SWYFS) has been providing critical services in significantly under-resourced communities of Southwest King County, including Southwest Seattle, White Center, South Park, Burien, and SeaTac. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and facilitate 4 to 5 weekly BAM groups per week within the assigned school community. Groups and services focus on youth engagement, clinical counseling, Men's Work, and Rites of Passage skills.
- Provide and record individualized support to all BAM participants. Additional individual, family and crisis counseling sessions administered to students on an as needed basis.
- In collaboration with BAM Supervisor, plan and execute field trips, and special events for students throughout the school year and summer.
- Participate in monthly staff curriculum development trainings and weekly team meetings. Staff curriculum development focuses on the evidence based BAM curriculum and other topics relevant to working with youth.
- Collaborate with school administration, teachers, and other SWYFS programs to create professional networks for communication and professional development.
- Collaborate and/or coordinate services with the local school council, and school parent engagement team.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required. A Master's Degree in social work, counseling or a related human service field from an approved accredited university is preferred
- 2+ years' experience providing supervised group counseling required
SKILLS/ ABILITIES
- Knowledge of advanced psychological concepts (e.g., CBT. Clinical Processing. Modeling and Group Development)
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to commit to working in at risk environments
- Ability to commit to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization's mission
- Requires effective communication skills
- Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills that excel in cultural sensitivity and respect for differences
- Must pass Criminal History background check
- Willingness to occasionally participate in youth sporting activities
