Mission Statement
The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
Responsibilities*
The Department of Afroamerican & African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan announces an open rank search for a scholar of Global Black Urban Studies. Candidates should investigate Black social and cultural life within urban spaces and foreground Black Studies epistemologies in their scholarship. This position sits at the intersection of urban planning, urban design, and cultural, humanistic, and social inquiry, especially with respect to meanings of space and place. We welcome scholars whose research and teaching interrogate the various ways that social positions are constituted and reconstituted in urban environments that engage transnational flows of culture, memory, sonic histories, foodways, multi-mediated stories, and non-human nature(s). We invite applications from scholars from all disciplines. We are especially interested in scholars situated in fields such as Black Geographies, Critical Geography, as well as the theory and praxis of Black social and cultural movements as well those with experience working in collaborative and interdisciplinary teams that are committed to anti-racist practices, community-based research, and co-produced knowledge. Finally, we are excited by candidates who contribute to our department's attentiveness to intersectionality around gender, gender expression, class, sexuality, (dis-)ability, and other forms of sociality. We see intersectionality as key to producing deeper understandings of how Black lived realities manifest themselves; how spatial trauma, disavowal, and displacement are constituted and experienced; and how emancipatory (Afro)futures get imagined and built.
The position will not only contribute to the current strengths of DAAS's community of scholars and teachers. It is also part of a thematic cluster dedicated to antiracist scholarship and teaching with companion hires in the Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning, as well as in Digital Studies (DS). Please find more information about the cluster here: https://provost.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/RacialJusticeUrbanHumanities.pdf
This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of August 26, 2024.
Required Qualifications*
Interested applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. prior to the appointment. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research.
Background Screening
The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
