The Associate General Counsel will be a member of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, INC.'s in-house Legal Department representing its Mid-West brands and associated entities, but also will be expected to provide advice on occasion to the company's broad portfolio of brands. The Associate General Counsel will have general corporate law experience, with extensive experience representing companies with a wide range of matters, including commercial and business transactions, employment law, food, beverage and labeling law, land use, financings, and dispute resolution. The Associate General Counsel will be responsible for supporting the General Counsel of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. This role manages and supports client groups by providing practical legal advice and recommendations on day-to-day legal issues.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal counsel on various substantive topics, including but not limited to, corporate law, contract law, food, beverage and labeling law, employment law, land use, and other areas pertinent to a major, vertically integrated, agricultural, manufacturing, commercial retail and e-commerce organization.
• Recommends and provides legal advice and support to the company's various business functions and will support developing routine policy and procedural improvements and providing practical advice in response to rapidly changing conditions.
• Monitors developments, including proposed legislation and court decisions related to food, beverage and labeling law and rules and regulations related to e-commerce, and evaluates their impact on operations.
• Works with outside legal counsel and orchestrates legal processes on behalf of the company at the direction of the General Counsel and executive leadership.
• Conducts legal research and applies research to facts and communicates the analysis effectively to leadership.
• Identifies legal risks and designs plans to mitigate and prevent routine legal risks.
• Drafts, reviews, and negotiates a variety of agreements and documents and continuously seeks ways to improve the forms, processes, or systems involved for various business clients including records retention and other projects as assigned.
• Collaborates on complex projects and supports others in the Legal Department (i.e. attorneys across the Legal Department) to provide meaningful and practical advice and recommendations to internal clients.
• Negotiates with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes, including negotiating key contract terms or settlement conferences.

• Juris Doctor degree and Illinois bar admission (active member in good standing)
• 5+ years of relevant experience in a top law firm or mixture of relevant experience in top law firm, corporate legal department setting, and/or government agency
• 5+ years of direct experience with public company legal issues, processes and procedures
• Must be willing to work in Chicago, Illinois and the associated suburbs

• Strong academic record; journal experience a plus
• Must be willing to work occasional holidays, evenings and weekends as needed
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
• Ability to work effectively under pressure; managing multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines
• Excellent negotiating, communication and writing skills
