General Statement:
The Assistant Supervisor of Camp Programs is an ambassador and educator for the Phoenix Zoo. This position works with the Camp Supervisor to manage the day-to-day operations of camps, including but not limited to Camp Zoo, Night Camp, birthday party Animal Discovery programs, and special ACNC/Zoo and education events. Additionally, this position assists with scheduling, staff hiring and training, ensuring exceptional standards of guest service and efficient program logistics, developing and facilitating programs, and motivating and evaluating staff.
Essential Duties:
- Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive and professional) working attitude and appearance.
- Assist in supervising the day-to-day operations of Camp Programs such as Camp Zoo, Night Camp, birthday party Animal Discovery programs and special ACNC/Zoo and education events. Act as the main point of contact for Camp Zoo and Night Camp when the supervisor is not present.
- Provide logistical support for a team of 30-35 Instructors during Camp Zoo and Night Camp.
- Maintain ability to serve in the role of Instructor I, II, or III and facilitate camp programs as needed.
- Maintain contact with teachers, caregivers and other internal or external camp contacts (phone calls and emails) in relation to program logistics.
- Maintain accurate program records, protocols and training manuals.
- Assist with hiring and the development and facilitation of orientation and training for new hires existing camp staff and volunteers.
- Assist in the planning and facilitation of staff meetings.
- Contribute to the development of high-quality programs and experiences for all guests, including designing inquiry-based curricula for groups.
- Assist in assessing, evaluating and working towards strengthening Camp Zoo and Night Camp staff and program offerings.
- Coordinate communication about program needs to other departments (Food Services, Events, Living Collections, Grounds Quality, Cruiser, Call Center, Marketing/PR, and Operations).
- Order and stock supplies, food, and materials for Camp Zoo, and Learning and Engagement Department, in accordance with the Learning and Engagement budget.
- Maintain Animal Handling Certification; responsible for knowing and abiding by proper handling, transportation, presentation, and interaction protocols for a diverse collection of animals in preparation for and during programs.
- Assist with marketing strategies, which may include staffing promotional booths and special events.
- Serve on the Learning and Engagement Leadership Team to help forward department strategic initiatives, ensure collaboration and consistency across the department and model for and mentor department staff.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in science or education preferred.
- Experience working with large groups in a leadership position preferred.
- Experience working with a range of audience sizes and ages, including early childhood through adult.
- Knowledge of child development and program specific academic, benchmarking, and/or best practices standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organization skills, and detail-oriented work style.
- Ability to speak with confidence and enthusiasm to audiences of all ages and to groups of all sizes.
- Experience in program development/design in a formal or non-formal setting preferred.
- Ability to handle and work with a variety of animals in a safe manner that abides by established animal protocols.
- Experience handling animals, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and invertebrates in a professional setting preferred.
- Bi-lingual English-Spanish preferred.
- Availability to work a flexible and varied schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events required.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds; regularly bend, crouch, and kneel; stand and walk for extended periods of time; work in both indoor and outdoor environments and in extreme weather conditions.
- Possession of valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test, DMV check, clear annual TB test, and obtain a Food Handler’s License within 1 month of hire.
- Ability to perform successfully in both a team environment and in a solitary setting.
