Job Title: Apprentice Electrician Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Reports to: Director, Facilities Pay Grade: MT06

Dept.: Facilities Contract Days: 242

Primary Purpose:

Provides standard technical, or production services or information that supports others, and/or organizes data and information that is used and analyzed by others.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED equivalent
A formal training program after High School
Must obtain a valid Apprentice Electrical License from the State of Texas within 10 working days of hire.
Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License (must be insurable through MVISD insurers).

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Effective oral/written communication skills.
Ability to follow detailed oral/written instructions;
Establish/maintain effective work relations.

Experience:
Minimum: No experience required.
Preferred: Experience in the electrical field as a helper or apprentice.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Under the supervision of a Journeyman or Master Electrician, perform the following duties:

1. Perform preventive maintenance: shut down electrical systems; perform repairs as needed to prevent future failures.

2. Troubleshoot electrical systems: diagnose/analyze/repair electrical system shorts/burnouts; restore power; ensure safety.

3. Replace lamps and ballasts.

4. Inspect/repair/install campus clock systems; adjust times when needed.

5. Spend time in shop to record work orders, inventory materials, handle miscellaneous paperwork, and clean up.

6. Troubleshoot and repair motors and equipment.

7. Install conduit for communication lines/data.

8. Inspect fire alarm system pull stations; troubleshoot system in response to calls.

9. Perform temporary electrical hook-ups for special events.

10. Install new panels, circuits, conduits, light fixtures, etc., to service newly constructed offices/classrooms.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Job Empowerment
The employee carries out instructions within an existing work routine. There is some leeway for changing the order of assigned tasks. However, prior approval is required before changing the nature of the work performed or before dealing with unassigned tasks.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Lifting: May be required to lift up to 75 lbs. alone, move more than 100 lbs. with help, and work in cramped spaces and inclement weather conditions
