This Analytical Microscopist is responsible for supporting Vitro glass and glass coating R&D, process, and production through characterization of materials and by providing timely, insightful reports to internal customers. The microscopy team is part of the Vitro Architectural Glass Analytical Services group. The microscopist will receive internal customer samples, prepare and then analyze them using microscopy tools, write analytical reports, interpret microscopy results in a way that can lead to new product development and defect minimization, provide microscopy consultation to internal customers, and present findings in R&D technical meetings, if needed.
Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a safe work environment
- Communicate with customer to determine analytical needs and schedules
- Receive and log samples into LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)
- Analyze samples and write report, log samples out of LIMS
- Communicate reports to customer and answer questions
- Communicate with universities and contract testing labs to identify and complete selected testing not done on-site, and to handle the reporting and purchasing details
- Purchase lab supplies, parts, equipment service contracts and approved capital purchases

- Ph.D. in area relevant to the materials and processes used in architectural glass and architectural glass coatings, such as but not limited to: metals, ceramics, thin film coatings, interference filters, minerals, and vacuum coating technology.
- 2 to 10 years of experience after Ph.D. defense
- Ability to follow verbal and written work instructions to create a safe workplace
- Direct professional experience with microscopy techniques; polarized light microscopy and SEM-EDX preferred but also AFM/SPM, FTIR-Microscopy, stylus profilometry, Nomarski/DIC and brightfield/darkfield optical microscopy
- Experience with ceramic materials characterization, specifically glass preferred
- Experience with multi-layer thin film materials preferred
- Ability to describe microscopy results in terms of fundamental material parameters and the structure/processing/properties paradigm
- Ability to interface with and seek out external resources at universities and contract labs and maintain those relationships to compliment in-house capabilities
- Ability to collaborate with other analytical scientists with specialties in surface & microanalysis and X-rays techniques such as XPS, XRF and XRD to support new product development and effective plant problem solving.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and peers to provide excellent customer service, both oral and technical written documents
- Professional experience providing testing reports preferred
