Oaklawn is one of few organizations in the country to provide dedicated mental health services for the Amish community. Our residential facilities are managed and staffed by local Amish, and Oaklawn clinicians provide treatment. The program features group therapy and educational programs in Pennsylvania Dutch, devotional experiences each morning and evening and flexible visiting hours.

What You’ll Do
We are looking for a full-time Amish Advocate. As the Amish Advocate, you will:
  • Provide case management and advocacy services to the Amish residents of, Rest Haven, Horizons of Hope, and Pleasant Haven group homes.
  • Speak Pennsylvania Dutch.
  • Facilitate the delivery of mental health services as specified.
  • Build and maintain relationships with leaders of regional conservative Anabaptist churches to assist them in helping church members find effective mental health services which are culturally and religiously sensitive.
  • Assist Amish community in accessing needed mental health services
  • Be an advocate for clients, families, and church leaders.
  • Obtain information that will assist Oaklawn clinicians/physicians in developing appropriate treatment plans.
  • Work with individual and families to ensure appropriate follow-up after an episode of care
  • Serve as an internal resource for providing culturally sensitive training to Oaklawn staff.
  • Participate in treatment staffings as requested.

The Amish Advocate interacts directly with clients and families. The frequency varies with needs, availability of client, and level of intensity. It is usually weekly or biweekly and includes availability for crisis intervention.
The Amish Advocate will also interacts frequently with outpatient therapists, physicians, and other center employees involved in the case. Clinical Supervision will be provided by credentialed staff. There is regular interaction with community agencies and providers such as: Amish bishops; DFC, court, schools, health care providers, referrals, and coordinate services. Caseload expectations will take into account training; case complexity, level of frequency and/or other assigned duties.
Requirements:
  • Formal education credentials may not be applicable in this job.
  • Sufficient knowledge to provide expertise of the Amish population, culture and language, networking circles in order to facilitate quality care.
  • Ten or more years of experience with Amish, evidence of experience in creating a networking circle sufficient to allow for successful facilitation of care.
  • Reputation of acceptance in the Amish community.
