JOB LOCATION: Waukee Family YMCA

HOURS/DAYS SCHEDULE: Evenings and Weekends

POSITION SUMMARY:

As an Assistant Site Swim Team Coach, you will have the opportunity to deliver professional customer service and relationship building skills to create a welcoming environment at the YMCA. The individual will be responsible for planning, managing and directing teams and for ensuring the safety of participants.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend scheduled team practices and meets.
  • Assist the head coach with developing and implementing the season training plan, themes, focus, workouts and team events which will challenge and motivate the swimmers maximizing their swimming potential.
  • Ability to follow and implement written workouts provided by the head coach.
  • Maintain proper records, team lists, and reports as needed.
  • Address member concerns by appointments and/or phone conversations and notify supervisor.
  • Relate to individual members on a professional basis at all times.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment.
  • Ensure safety of participants by enforcing policies and disciplinary rules.
  • Report specific problems or needs to supervisor or designated staff person.
  • Create an environment that welcomes all types of swimmers from varying levels and backgrounds.
  • Communicate with the team about information regarding team activities, meets, goals and daily training plans/themes
  • Know emergency procedures and be able to demonstrate them.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
  • Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions
  • Completion of high school or equivalent
  • Two years competitive coaching experience
  • Working knowledge of competitive teams
  • Training needed prior to starting if hired:
    • United States Masters Swimming Coach with DSMY Certification
    • American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches (Lifeguard certification will be accepted with proof of successful completion of the online Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification)
    • YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving
    • Registered USA Swimming Coach
    • Intro to Y’s Cause & Culture Online Course
  • Training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained afterwards

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work with diverse group of people.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport, create relationship and to motivate members.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper techniques.
  • Ability to maintain control even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability work with minimal supervision.
  • Attend training and/or courses as required by the YMCA.
  • Attend training and/or courses as required to maintain Registered USA Swimming and USMS Coaching Designation (Masters Coaches only).
  • Ability to demonstrate a desire to serve others, fulfill community needs and take the initiative to assist in developing others.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in all situations and transfer learning from one situation to another.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of program participants and families.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to step in as a lead coach when the head coach is not present or available.
