Position Summary:

Kemper Health offers specialized insurance options that provide customers with greater control over their healthcare costs. Kemper Health’s affordable insurance policies provide customers with a choice of protection solutions that meet their unique needs while maintaining their choice of providers. While under direct supervision from a qualified health actuary, the Actuarial Analyst will help further Kemper Health’s strategy by performing basic actuarial analyses, assisting in preparing internal management information and financial reports and/or external filings, and assisting in the design of new and revised reports.

Working in our Chicago office, the Actuarial Analyst will have the opportunity to lead or assist in analysis, research, and enhancement of actuarial processes that impact financial results for Kemper Health.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Prepares routine to moderately complex internal management information and actuarial/financial reports and/or external filings, following established procedures.
  • Assists in the revision and/or design of internal reports and/or external filings as required and assists in preparing related automation requests as necessary.
  • Assists in responding to questions regarding internal reports and/or external filings.
  • Assists in conducting actuarial analysis for rate-making purposes on existing and new products, using the concepts of trend, development, credibility, and present value, as appropriate.
  • Assists in conducting actuarial analysis for the determination of adequate reserve levels.
  • Makes efficient use of automation tools to improve the timeliness, accuracy, and content of reports, or to support actuarial research and experience.
  • Assures that written job procedures are maintained on all reports where responsibility exists and recommends improvements in procedures to save time, improve accuracy or improve the usefulness of the information.
  • Monitors results of assigned area of responsibility, noting unexpected results.
  • Assists in the preparation of analytical memos which require actuarial analysis to provide an interpretation of management information reports.
  • Assists in examining data to support effective underwriting and marketing decisions.
  • Assists in projecting the impact of suggested corporate strategies, as requested.
  • Assists in analyzing trends, demonstrating an understanding of internal and external factors affecting such trends.
  • Keeps abreast of technical and procedural changes involving areas where responsibility exists.
  • Identifies innovations and developments and communicates them appropriately.
  • Takes corrective action regarding problems and situations within limits of responsibility.
  • Improves actuarial expertise on an on-going basis by studying for and passing Society of Actuary examinations.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, or related field.
  • One or more years of experience as an actuarial analyst a plus
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience with SQL and VBA preferred. SAS and other program languages a plus.
  • Has passed 1 or more Society of Actuaries exams
  • Demonstrates effective and diplomatic oral and written communication skills
