General Summary: This position performs tasks in the Access Services department, and at the circulation desk, to provide library users with access to library materials and service.

Job duties:

  • Provide exemplary customer service to library patrons and model a positive and helpful attitude for student employees.
  • Instruct and supervise student employees in the use of library systems and equipment (i.e. library catalog, ILS, print system, POS) as well as library policies and procedures (i.e. consortial borrowing, course reserves, shelving, customer service).
  • Use specialized knowledge of ILS and Student Financial Services to manage and maintain all records pertaining to library fines and replacement fees. Including process overdue and fine notices, bill patron accounts, oversee book searches, negotiate and resolve patron billing inquiries.
  • Perform all circulation services, from routine to complex, as well as make decisions concerning exceptional circumstances, e.g., waive and/or explain fines and library policies, extend loan periods, and authorize lending privileges in special circumstances.
  • Provide assistance to library users in the operation of various pieces of library technology and equipment. Coordinate the proper functioning of library equipment.
  • Use problem solving skills to analyze, negotiate and resolve, or report, library user complaints concerning building, equipment, or service.
  • Substitute and perform the duties of absent staff and student employees as needed.
  • Assume responsibility, with other staff members, for the safety and security of staff, students, equipment, and materials in the building as well as during any emergency. Serves as a Building Emergency Coordinator.
  • Responsible for opening and closing (securing) and maintaining the operations of the library building and Access Services as assigned. The person in this position will typically work a mid-day Tuesday - Saturday shift but scheduling needs may change.

Job Requirements:
  • Two years of college level course work.
  • One year of public service experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication qualifications, and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. Course work in library science.
  • One year library experience.
  • Two years of public service and supervisory experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite; Library resource management systems, preferably Ex Libris Alma.
